Sauce Labs raises $50 million to help developers test their apps across browsers and devices

Software testing platform Sauce Labs has raised $50 million in a fresh round of funding from Riverwood Capital. This takes the company’s total cash raised to more than $150 million since its inception in 2008, and comes a little more than two years after its last cash injection of $70 million.

San Francisco-based Sauce Labs serves to help developers test their websites and applications across multiple browser and operating system configurations. Through cloud-based emulators and simulators, Sauce Labs enables companies to test their software on thousands of virtual iOS and Android devices, as well as various versions of Windows and Mac OS, to ensure that applications run smoothly on as many user devices as possible. Crucially, Sauce Labs also automates continuous testing, allowing developers to test their web and mobile apps for bugs as they code.

Sauce Labs already counts some major clients, including Walmart, Visa, Splunk, and GoDaddy, and with another $50 million in the bank, it said that it plans to evolve its portfolio of products “beyond functional testing,” according to a statement, so that it can give its users a more holistic view of the application experience. Though it didn’t divulge what this will entail, part of this will involve investing in research and development, and pursuing other “strategic growth” opportunities.

“As leading digital brands increasingly emphasize rapid delivery of flawless web and mobile applications, the global continuous testing market continues to grow and evolve,” noted Sauce Labs CEO Charles Ramsey. “With this new round of funding from Riverwood, Sauce Labs is well positioned to continue its rapid growth.”

Big money

Significant investment is being put into the broader developer operations (DevOps) sphere, and app-testing platforms have figured prominently in this. Earlier this month, for example, San Jose’s Functionize raised $16 million for its cloud-based platform that autonomously detects software bugs, while last year India’s BrowserStack closed a $50 million funding round. Elsewhere, New York-based cloud monitoring company Datadog recently snapped up AI-powered app-testing startup Madumbo.

And it’s against that backdrop that Menlo Park-based private equity firm Riverwood Capital, which focuses on high-growth companies, elected to go it alone in this latest funding round into Sauce Labs.

” We envision a day in the not-too-distant future in which every company in the world invests heavily in continuous testing,” said Riverwood Capital cofounder and managing partner Jeff Parks, who now joins Sauce Labs’ board of directors. “We’re thrilled to partner with Charles and his world-class management team to help take Sauce Labs and its customers to new heights.”
