It’s well known among cannabis circles that it can help relieve general anxiety for many. But it turns out that might not be the only type of anxiety disorder that can be positively influenced by taking a puff.
A new review of cannabis studies shows that cannabinoids can help treat symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD, by targeting the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating the signalling in a person’s neurotransmitters.
The review is an analysis of both animal and human trials on the effects of cannabinoids. Researchers looked at studies that analyzed how the human body produces cannabinoids as well as the effects of externally produced cannabinoids, like the ones found in the cannabis plant.
In addition to all the studies analyzed, the researchers also pointed to anecdotal evidence from patients with OCD. Many of them say that smoking pot relieves their obsessive symptoms.
“Is there a place for cannabinoid-based medicines in psychiatry? Evidence from animal and human studies points to the endocannabinoid system as an important regulator of emotionality, but how can we exploit this knowledge for therapy? This review article offers a critical assessment of the evidence, focused on obsessive compulsive disorder, and clues to future research,” says Daniele Piomelli Editor-in-Chief of the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research.
Who knows, maybe anxiety meds will soon have a new ingredient.
