L.A. Council earmarks $9 million to help minorities enter city’s cannabis space
Published 1 min ago
The Los Angeles City Council approved three years of funding for the city’s marijuana social equity program, in answer to a longstanding demand from minority cannabis entrepreneurs eager to get into the industry.
The council approved $3 million a year for the next three years for the Department of Cannabis Regulation’s social equity program, with $1.5 million set for allocation immediately, the Los Angeles Sentinel reported.
The equity program is designed to give a leg up in the L.A. marijuana market to minorities and those affected by the war on drugs, but it’s been stifled for months because of a lack of funding to process and grant business licenses.
The Council’s move could jump-start the program and result in more business licenses being issued at a quicker pace.
